The firstborn daughter of Colonel Paul James Tate (1922–2005), an intelligence officer in the United States Army, and his wife Doris Gwendolyn Willett (1924–1992).
Eldest sister to Debra Ann Tate (*1952) and Patricia Gay Tate (1957-2000).

Promotions/Transferrals
Paul Tate was promoted and transferred several times. His career necessitated frequent transfers, which contributed to Sharon being shy and find it difficulty to maintain friendships during her childhood. By the age of 16, Tate had lived in six different cities.
